Poor in spirit

February 20, 2014

“The way to become poor in spirit is to look at God.”

– D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

“To be poor is spirit is to recognize one’s spiritual poverty apart from God. It is to see oneself as one really is: lost, hopeless, helpless. Apart from Jesus Christ every person is spiritually destitute, no matter what his education, wealth, social status, accomplishments, or religious knowledge. That is the point of the first beatitude. The poor in spirit are those who recognize their total spiritual destitution and their complete dependence on God. They perceive that there are no saving resources in themselves and that they can only beg for mercy and grace. They know they have no spiritual merit, and they know they can earn no spiritual reward. Their pride is gone, their self-assurance is gone, and they stand empty-handed before God.”

– John MacArthur

A few Dominican Republic Homes

Very poor area in the Dominican Republic; where animals and humans are living in very close proximity.

After leaving this place, it was hard to imagine living in this situation as the stench from the mixture of animal manure, urine, and rain water were right outside these homes that were not actually air tight. Having grown up around farm animals and scraping manure into large pits, it was not as shocking to see and smell such stench. But to have it so close to the homes was surely frightful and concerning because of the possibility of diseases to those living so close by, especially the kids who play in the area.
