William Carey (1761-1834) was a Baptist missionary to India. He translated the Bible into forty different languages and dialects including Bengali and Sanskrit. This video shows how he sailed to India with a reluctant wife and four children to bring the message of Jesus in other languages and endured hardship for over 40 years. Though sadly the beginning and ending years of his life are excluded from this video, but can be found in written biographies of him and many other details not in this video.

Note: Many years after his death, apostasy has since found its way into Serampore University that was founded by William Carey. Missionary David Cloud did an interview with “Mr. Joy” the head of the New Testament department at Serampore University in 1983. Cloud said that “Mr. Joy said he believed there are many ways to become a Christian (by baptism, confirmation, being born into a Christian home, etc.) and he was convinced that sincere Hindus and Buddhists go to Heaven when they die.”

Thomas Armitage a Baptist historian wrote:

“William Carey’s ‘Inquiry into the Obligations of Christians to use means for the Conversion of the Heathen’ was published in 1792, but it found few readers and produced little effect. To most of the Baptists Carey’s views were visionary and even wild, in open conflict with God’s sovereignty. At a meeting of ministers, where the senior [John] Ryland presided, Carey proposed that at the next meeting they discuss the duty of attempting to spread the Gospel amongst the heathen. … Ryland, shocked, sprang to his feet and ordered Carey to sit down, saying: ‘When God pleases to convert the heathen, he will do it without your aid or mine!’”

Sounds like John Ryland was a Hyper Calvinist without the true understanding of the scriptures:

Romans 10:13-17 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Luke 24:46-47 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Baptist preachers

“.. fundamental Baptist preachers claim to follow Christ and His Word alone, but after 39 years of experience in these circles I am convinced that most follow a crowd instead (e.g., one’s associates in some fellowship or mission or other organization, one’s fellow graduates of a certain school, some “good old boy’s network” of Bible conference speakers, one’s fellow admirers of some influential pastor). When this is the case, the crowd determines the preacher’s position on “non-essential” doctrines and practices (falsely so called). ……

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6).

Another reason why a large percentage of fundamental Baptist churches will be well down the emerging path in 20 years is that there is widespread ignorance about important issues such as contemporary music, New Evangelicalism, the Southern Baptist Convention, Reformed theology, reconstructionism, charismaticism, Neo-orthodoxy, Darwinian and theistic evolution, contemplative mysticism, and the emerging church.”

“It now takes twice as long for missionaries to raise their support as it did 20 years ago. Every year we are sending fewer and fewer missionaries from America. Many missionaries get discouraged and quit before ever getting to the field.”
